I believe the most tragic example of a character taking over an actor’s life was River Phoenix. Mr. Phoenix had been building a very good career, beginning as a child film actor in Rob Reiner’s screen adaptation of Stephen King’s ”Stand By Me” and expanding to Inspired Zelensky Ukrainian Che Guevara Zegevara Shirt with more recognition like “The Mosquito Coast” and then a really fun plum – playing the Young Indy in the opening sequence of “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.” You might even say Phoenix stole both of those films from Harrison Ford! Plus, of course, his role in Sidney Lumet’s “Running On Empty,” which earned Phoenix a Supporting Actor Oscar nomination. His star was clearly on the rise. But it was when River starred in Gus Van Zant’s over the top drug related film “My Own Private Idaho” that things took a decidedly nasty turn. Phoenix got involved in drugs, ostensibly as research for his role in the film, but he continued to use after principal photography ended. His longtime girlfriend Martha Plimpton left him over it, but even that did not sway him. On October 30, 1993, just beyond the second anniversary of the release of “Idaho,” River and an entourage of friends and siblings were at Johnny Depp’s Viper Room club on the Sunset Strip. Phoenix was scheduled to play a set with a band that included Red Hot Chili Peppers’ bassist, Flea. Accounts differ as to what exactly happened, but Phoenix, who already had a mix of drugs in his system, somehow overdosed, was rushed to the hospital and died. This was a heart wrenching gut punch to the Hollywood community, to his fans around the world and, of course, to his loved ones. We can never know the answers to “what if?” but there were so many chances to have stopped this, it still feels really raw, even now, decades later.
