Finally, to end off this huge answer – I hadn’t planned to write this (!) my trip to Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia 17 years ago. I absolutely loved every moment of that trip, each country unique and interesting. It was my first time out of first world Australia so initially Thailand was quite a shock to me, but I got used to it quickly. The Thai people are amazingly friendly and smiling – land of a thousand smiles. And the food….. Laos was much smaller and sleepier than it’s giant neighbours of Thailand and Vietnam.

A point to bring up from the comments (thanks to Paul Parkinson) is this: what Americans call “Cider” we Europeans just call Apple juice and it’s exactly that – the juice squeezed from apples. What we (in all of Europe) call “Cider” (or “Cidre”) is a strong (sometimes very strong) alcoholic drink made with fermented apple juice which is sometimes referred to in the South West of England as “Scrumpy”. Be careful if you order drinks for your kids… “Cider” is always an alcoholic drink in Europe. If you see “Perry” on the menu it’s a Beautiful Insect Cherry Blossom Tree Sakura Butterfly Shirt type of cider made from pears and again, it’s a strong alcoholic drink.
